Tidal Rhythms

The site, Clarkes point reserve at Woolwich, represents a place of dynamism and vigour within Sydney harbour as the place where the Lane Cove and Parramatta rivers collide.

Our interaction with the theatrical can be described as a descent into the unknowns of literature. Staging, lighting effects, prop use, alongside all the tools of theatre is used to create a performance of suspense and excitement, transporting the audience into a world of spectacle. This concept has been my main driver in the design of the harbour auditorium, the architecture aiming to allegorically allude to the intricacies of the theatrical. This concept has been established in my conceptual collage, as the viewer is represented to walk a path of water to a distant point, descending deeper into a hall built of literature.

The core of the architecture is in the response to the ebb and flow of the tides, which reveals and conceals the walkways and pavilions throughout the day and night. The open roof plaza allows users to walk between the structures, accessible only half of the day, whilst the entrance flooded three hours a day. The constantly changing tides vary the degree of sunlight into the structure, as flooded skylight points diffuse the light and dim the internal spaces.
